New Windows 10 May update is here: How to download and everything else to know – CNET.How to fix Windows Update problems in Windows 10
Thank you for your suggestion and recommendation to resolve my problem. I have tried Method 1, initially I thought the problem was resolve after executing the. But when I clicked on Check Update again the same problem resurfaces again. So I believe the only option would be go for Method 2 but the link you have provided by PaulSey only provides in-place Windows upgrade and not from the created installation media or iso.
Is there another link that provides a guide on installing via the media files? I notice that there are quite a lot of folders and files that are leftover by multiple upgrades of windows 10, is there a recommended way to clean up all the leftover folders and files from previous versions of Windows 10?
I have tried Method 2 as well and it did not work as the tool did try to download Windows 10 and when the download was completed the installation try to take place but when it tried to check on the existing updates and to download the needed updates, the status of the update suddenly changed below is the last message that pop up.
It strange that I didn’t even plug in a USB flash drive while doing this in-place upgrade. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. Kim Hi there, I have been experiencing problems with Windows 10 update for a few months ever since I have updated to version 20H2.
Then the status will go back to the previous status as shown below: If I try to click on ‘Download and Install’ Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for xbased Systems KB , the following is what is captured: Then nothing happens, we are back to exactly the same status as before with the Error Encountered message. I have tried to use Windows Update troubleshooter but there were no problems identified.
Below is the windows update history captured from my PC: Appreciate anyone with similar encounter share what can be done to rectify this problem. Regards, Kim. If it didn’t, continue to the next tip.
Update any drivers, then try to run updates again and see if this resolved your issue. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager , then select Device Manager from the list of results. In the window that appears, look for any device with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. You may have to select each category to view the list of devices. Select the device name. Select Action , and then choose either Update driver or Uninstall to correct the errors.
If you are receiving an error message with a specific error code, try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, see Fix Windows Update errors and follow the instructions to help resolve common update issues. The time required to download and install updates depends on connection speed, network settings, and the size of the update. If the installation remains stuck at the same percentage, try checking for updates again or running the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Feature updates typically happen twice per year, and you can control when to install them.
They require more data but are less frequent. Metered connections in Windows Your computer might be slow for a number of reasons, but updating to the latest version of Windows 10 can improve its performance. This feature is enabled default on all Windows machines including Home and Pro editions, and it can be abused by attackers to remotely execute code.
If exploited, attackers would gain full access to a domain controller. For example, it weakens the local security and exploitation could be possible. In the document, Microsoft explained that installing the emergency Windows Update addresses the critical remote code execution bug in Print Spooler service, and admins can once again apply signed or unsigned printer drivers to a print server.
When you run the above two commands, Windows will disable and prevent the Print Spooler service from starting again. If you want to re-enable the service, run these commands in PowerShell:. Alternatively, you can mitigate the printing vulnerability by making changes to the Group Policy Editor. To disable the Print Spooler and address PrintNightmare bug, follow these steps:. This will restore the print spooler service and a system reboot is not required.
I had to pay for a new hard drive. My computer is a little over one year old. Since you get to update without my permission and this is supposedly your property, then I want you top pay for the fix. This is expensive and a huge unnecessary pain redoing everything.
I downloaded update last night and turned off the computer. This morning when I turned it on again, there was basically nothing on my computer which is a Dell Inspiron lap top that was running Windows 10 fine until now. Now literally nothing on my computer except recycle bin and icons the taskbar that there is no audio system.
My computer is about 18 months old and no trouble until this. So much might be list:. I have 2 external hard drives, they are both stuck at drive D: D: two drive letters. I go to disk management to fully clear them and than make a new drive letter. But when I asign any drive letter backup settings still says M: M: two drives letters whatever I set it as.
This is crap Microsoft! My computer downloaded the most recent updates last night. Today, after two hours, it was unable to complete the installation of the updates. It is still locked up trying to restore a previous version of Windows I have work I need to get done, and this is not helpful.
The sane thing happened to me. Still, I think this is really shoddy work on the part of Microsoft, to have such a shoddy product that people like us are left in a lurch. I did the upgrade last night on my notebook and it is totally chaos.
In the morning, it takes another few hours I went out and back home to continue install after reboot. When I back home again, the notebook is shutdown automatically and I thought it is finally completed. Then I turn it on again but it then said roll back to previous windows version, it takes about minutes and suddenly the power is off. Oh my god, I keep pressing the power button but nothing happen. Seems I need to say goodbye to my notebook now. Could anybody tell me what happens?
My computer is almost entirely crashed. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted and then try again. SO… now what? They had been unable to get past the screens that I encountered. Hoping to hear something soon. I am suspecting that the update created a new partition on the hard and the computer is trying to load from it but it is lacking the desktop file… Tomorrow I will check it!
I had that same error message about lacking the desktop file. I just heard back from Staples, and it appears that a number of people have had the same issue. In my case, they have to reset the whole system back to its factory settings. I do hope that Microsoft is seeing these widespread problems, and addressing them for the future. Sounds like my problem. It takes me back to a blue screen to choose language and when i do it asks if I want to rollback or go to previous version.
Nothing worked. Automatic update created partition on hard drive that wasnt there before. Steam app no longer works and all saved games gone. Pathways to run programs disrupted. I have used Microsoft my whole life. This is unforgivable.
I have assembled computers before, and have a fair working knowledge of PCs. After this experience on my desktop and now my laptop I will not use any more Microsoft products. I am furious, and my only recourse is to take my business elsewhere, and convince as many people as I can to do the same. My Outlook account is not working! All in all, the whole PC seems to take almost twice as long to start up and to open programs.
Windows updated over weekend. Today I restored to pervious version. My touch screen stopped working in Chrome with the new update. My P7 Lenovo slowed way down with the new update. Did they have any beta testing done or is this the best they can do with beta testing?
The latest April update killed my HP desktop. There is nothing wrong with the hardware. Nothing can be done. I tried everything. I need to remove the hard disk and copy all the relevant files. And then I must reinstall Windows. Microsoft has serious problems.
I am thinking of all the hapless people who only have one home computer, or all those whose work computer is killed this way.
This sort of thing will wreck their nerves. My HP desktop is showing an error screen this morning. Said it was looking for repairs, but then said to restart or use Advanced Options. Restart did nothing. Now it is telling me to reset my computer but I will lose all apps and settings. This is my home business computer. After the March 14th update, my Chrome browser slowed down to dial-up speeds. The following day, I received an alert in Windows that told me that Microsoft Edge is much faster than Chrome.
I have no interest in even trying Edge, knowing how Microsoft has manipulated their market. Thank you so much for your feedback. BUT, I try again, give n your comments. In other words — they are useless because the path should be c:userdocuments. All iTunes stuff lost, so my playlists and so forth are gone. Very RUDE to remove programs and change everything around for an update. MAR 18, — I am having problems with chrome opening certain sites, at some point.
Do you want to close windows? Then restart and it finally clears up and starts normally. I should have made a video of it. Next time I will. Are they really installing the entire OS?
After reading some of the comments on this page. Obviously not been thought through becauase there is an alternative OS out there called Android that causes virtually no problems at all. Downloading from microsoft store now impossible. Micorosoft suuport say there vis a last option to fix any problems.
I have another. Moving over to Android as Microsoft seem hellbent on destroying any customer relations that has not been destroyed up to date from previous updates doing similarvthings to Win I have not used Windows 10 since last year after having multiple problems with updates including losing my entire operating system and endless update loops.
I am using my old Windows 7 computer with updates turned off. It cannot update if is not connected to the internet. This may be a good way for some to deal with the problem. Not sure what to do. Nothing works. Powered off Thurs P M and was fine. Powered back up Sat PM and nothing works. MS screensaver on with time but mouse and keyboard no work. Cannot get login to appear. I had all the problems with windows 10 you could think about , Freezing screen , losing files , you name it i had the problem.
The last straw for me was when it loaded 4 versions of windows 10 on my Desk Top and it just killed the computer completely.
So i sold everything to a person for scrap parts. I bought a Chrome Box off Amazon and had to change the printer as well as they only work with Google Cloud , i can honestly tell you now that i have had not 1 thing go wrong at all, no waiting around for updates or minutes or an hour to start up like it did before as i can get on the internet within 20 sec every single time.
I wish i had done this some time ago as i was getting so angry and frustrated with windows 10 that i was ready to explode. Now hassle free and peaceful using the internet. Thanks for the reply and the suggestion.
My priority is to my eBay buyers now after my return from a day on vacation. Anyway—what a hassle. Thanks again!! Every thing i go on runs very smooth , even my grown up daughter and come off windows 10 since i did and she loves it much better than all the hassle on windows Good Luck. Was working fine before.
Two days of struggling, and eventually have to pay for pro repair!!!!! About time Microsoft took some responsibility for this ridiculousness. After installation, display is darker after every launch and I have to go to Nvidia panel to change display options for Nvidia drivers. When I tried to go back to previous version of windows Xbox live stopped working can not log in so I had to install back this irritating update.
I do not know why this update installed some free games from windows store. Is anybody went back to previous version of windows and have Xbox live working? All my other non-windows devices connect to my router without any issues. Resetting my Win 10 to the previous build as I type this on my Android smartphone..
Windows 10 is too invasive and in your face. The latest update happened while my computer was idle and closed some of my programs. I lost a lot of information between saves. Keep pushing me to Linux, MS. The latest critical update caused my keyboard and mouse to stop working once I rebooted.
Only works in bios and advance repair screen. I have a shop and received 3 desktops today with no USB after update. I feel for machines without ps2 ports…. All others so far seem to be fine. One of the two I resolved by rolling back to before the update. This morning, the update had already redownloaded and reinstalled itself. Right back to no USB recognition period.
So I rolled it back again, and disabled delayed the updates. Tried to roll back to the restore point prior to the update. Thought that system was fixed until it was restarted. The last update caused my desktop to become unusable. My husband worked with support, and had to reload the whole system. The updates load at times when you are held up from tasks that need to be done. How can I shut these off? Start menu disappears , reappears after restart…and yeah the slow starts ,and black screens are an issue as well.
Totally calamity after the latest big creator update. All rock solid prior to. I searched online for solutions and followed start-up repair, command, reset back to previous point but none of them worked. Now I am going to bring it to professional tech guys to repair. I am scare of any update from Microsoft in a fear of causing me expenses for repair.
I have been trying to fix it for over 12 hours and my frustration is equivalent to 10 mega ton nuke and I want to eliminate Microsoft from the face of the earth. You can imagine how angry I am. This is the second time having problems caused by Windows 10 updates.
Microsoft should stop Windows 10 and give Winfows 8 free download. Hello everyone Got update however i did turn off automatic updates took whole day to install, but after that everything works almost fine. Installed new Nvidia drivers and solved but there is a problem with darker display after every time i turn on the PC. After log in I always have to go to Nvidia driver settings and set monitor colour and brightness setting to Nvidia.
It is getting irritating. I tried to reset the update but after that half of the programs didnt work properly so it forced me to stay on the new update. Anyone have any solution or have similar problem. It is on PC not laptop. My computer has essentially frozen this evening Feb 13 with a constantly running hard drive and excessively slow processing.
No warning screen announcing the update, just awful performance. I launched task manager…but it too was horribly slow, but I was finally able to click restart…then the warning came up that windows was updating and warned not to shut down. Tried everything — finally had to take it to a repair place and she had it several days — only solution was to wipe the hard drive and totally reinstall. SO frustrating! Trying to troubleshoot it from work PC now. Any suggestions??? Window 10 is a fraud, everytime it does a upgrade which I have no control of on my Lenovo laptop it cannot be restarted, I have to uninstall everything, reinstall the operating system and reinstall programs and data, I am sick of this crap Microsoft, as you know this is going on, and have known since your windows 8 stuff up.
Instead, clicking on anything takes me back to my mail. Same goes for not being able to view all of the text in an email thread. Clicking to view the full text of a message — either one that I wrote, or another person in the thread sent, just takes me back to the main page of my email. Multiple issues that all trace back to the system being so clogged that it takes minutes for any program to launch and they freeze after a couple of minutes.
Then wait another 2 or 3 minutes after clicking on settings to launch that menu. I have had 3 issues in the hours after this update. This is unusual. It seemed like a major update taking over an hour on my SSD drive high speed 1st gen.
I did my latest updates for my hp pavilion desktop pc p0xx and the update has caused the entire graphics system to display black as green and white and a bright light pink, all of the other colours are messed up as well. This effects everything from photos to video. I was able to fix it once by restoring an older version of Windows I did the updates again and now I am back to the dam problem except there dose not seem to be any older versions of Windows 10 that I can revert to now.
I need this fixed any help would be greatly appreciated. The function keys on my HP envy laptop do not work like volume screen brightness etc — worked yesterday before update now nothing have to do it with software on screen. Icons have become blank that represent file types. At first my alpha keys were acting as hotkeys — rebooted ad that issue went away — very frustrating.
I was on it last night, no troubles at all last month. I go to turn it on today and the fans turn on for 1 second then turn right back off. I have a Ryzen 5 x watercooled with 16 gb ddr 4 and MSI gtx Facebook is still having problems today.
Trying to access groups.. And if I try to post on my own Facebook page I can not.. I can not access messenger now.. I came across where Window 10 may be a problems. Did anyone else have this problem? After update ran, on reboot I get a bluescreen asking for keyboard layout. All choices lead back to the same keyboard menu. Windows 10 latest update has been trying to automatically load itself without success for several days.
The one that started last night continued its trek today but only succeeded in wiping my files, photos, installed programs, etc completely from my computer. Links have nothing to link to and even the windows button does not respond. This last Microsoft debacle tops all I have seen.
What happened? I went from a perfect, happy computer pre-update to a demon-possessed POS post update. My update hit this afternoon. Some games have their graphics hosed and the windows button in the lower left is unusable. I have to exit windows through the Task Manager. It disabled my system restore and wiped my restore points. What in the h3ll could Microsoft have done to screw this up so bad.
Did they release an update or a virus!? I did find a 23Gb section that reads, previous installation. How to I activate this. On boot, lost my second monitor. This morning….
Clicked on forgot password and then the screen went black. Never have seen this on the startup screen. I read online to press shift and the restart button on the computer so I am in the computer without password for now but not sure about next time.
Very frustrating. All I get now is a black screen. Ctl-Alt-Del will give me a menu which includes task manager, but selecting that returns me to a black screen. Website links that I want to email to others no longer works when I click File — Send — Link by email.
Also, when I shut down the computer, SnagIt always shows that it is not closed where before the update I never had to go into SnagIt to close it beforehand.
I also noticed that right before I would shut down windows, it was fully charged. The computer is only about a year old and again, I did not have this problem prior to this last update. HATE the latest Skype update from a few days ago!
I have a skype phone number and I love that I can talk with my friend on skype and call in another by phone to the call…. Not any more! Not a simple click to call, I have to create a group, you make me look for the member and if I am LUCKY I might actually get to click on the right entity to add to the call. Any call I have made, it comes up as missed. Today, my cell phone would ring with an incoming skype call and my desktop would not even react.
Have to answer, hang up and call back on my desktop. What the hell is going on? Failed on reboot. System appears to freeze at a black screen. Recovered to previous restore point and tried again with same result.
My mouse has bugged out since the update. It has to be in constant motion or it freezes and needs to be clicked to function again. I have continuing problems with programs freezing intermittently or keyboard inputs freezing as well, all programs affected but IE more than edge for instance. My PC is a recent HP tower. No disk space or Ram issues. I have done all except reinstall Windows Problems started in October or November I think. Any ideas? No outlook, it says its not compatible, no internet explorer, the programme does not seem to exist.
Both worked before the December update. Even though the Webcam is built into the computer, I cant find it in the device manager or any of the hardware, and the webcam app redirects me to a troubleshooter page. We hope that the next round of updates can fix this, but until then, we need to buy a replacement.
As a technology consulting business we have clients in several states. Currently we are dealing with DEAD computers, broken network shares, terminated drive mappings, lost printers, Office activation issues, virtual machines down. All occurring immediately following an update, with the worst issues after a cumulative update IE: Fall Creators update.
Another client is giving new employees the option of Windows or IOS. Two out of three recent hires chose Mac. In my conversations with Microsoft I am basically told — we know, we are working on it, we apologize. If we want more information, Google.
What a mess. Issues are multiple, we have modified to the metered settings which is preventing more updates for 2 out of 3, the 3rd laptop is still getting updates this week, 2 of them which instead of helping is undoing all the fixes we had already done for various apps and functions.
Problems with email, as in NO emails at all, extremely slow and freeze to no function at all, even closing is not possible. Internet browsing is a nightmare.
