I’ve tried all of the measures detailed in various places in the Adobe Support Community, and have gone through lengthly troubleshooting sessions with support reps, but continue to experience the same problems. It’s unclear to me whether those products even permit you to apply lighting effects to a 2D image.
Lighting effects have completely stopped working for me, which really sucks. I used to use this tool a lot and now I feel completely inhibited in my work with this feature utterly useless. I am at a loss. I hope this somehow gets fixed. At some point. I’m on Windows 10, using the newest update of Photoshop cc I thought it was me doing something wrong.
The Lighting Effects doesn’t work at all. Sometimes gives a blank white document. Adobe is faced with two options. Obviously, Adobe is choosing the second option. But read on to see what you can do. I used the Graduated Filter in three areas, similar to the snail image. I added a magenta color tint on the grass, bottom left of the image to break up the green flat look.
Adding a different color using the graduated Filter in this way gives the image more depth. I then added a Lens Flare effect to the top right and reduced the opacity so that the effect caught the tips of the blades of grass. Converting your image to a Smart Object first before applying the filter effect, makes it easier to make changes non-destructively.
I was also able to mask out some of the effect that I felt was too strong. This brings me onto the third technique, the Color Dodge blend mode. I wanted to create the effect that the rear lights were switched on in this image of a car below.
